John D. Cutter, MD, was born in Bangor, Maine, on January 26, 1858. After graduating from the Medical University of New York City in 1881 where he received his MD degree, he located to Big Rapids, Michigan where he first began the practice of medicine. He was the first doctor to practice here, coming on the first stage, December 19, 1886, operated by Louis Hildebrand that ran between Merrill and the Wisconsin River Dam site; the same stage eventually traveled to Tomahawk once the city was established. In addition to practicing medicine, he was also timekeeper at the dam. Once the city of Tomahawk was established, Dr. Cutter built up a good practice, occupying the upper part of the post office. From time to time he rendered service to other matters. He served four years as superintendent of the Tomahawk schools when that office was elective, and he served four terms as mayor of the city.
Dr. Cutter passed away in 1927.
Served in WWI, in practice with Dr. William McCormick. Dr. Baker was born on December 27, 1873 and passed away on January 9, 1961
Dr. McCormick was born in Tomahawk on July 16, 1893, the son of Charles J. and Sarah (McCutcheon) McCormick. He studied at the Tomahawk public schools and was graduated from the high school there. He attended Valparaiso University, Indiana, where he received his B.S. degree. He took his medical work at Loyola University, Chicago, where he received his M.D. He then returned to Tomahawk and established his medical practice. Before he received his medical schooling, he was employed as a woodsman and also worked for the railroad in the Tomahawk region. Dr. McCormick served in the Medical Corps in WWI, receiving his discharge papers on June 1, 1919. He was a member of the Officers' Reserve Corps for 20 years.
On November 1, 1919, he was married to Laura Johnson of Spirit, following her death in 1927, he married the former Hazel V. Bingham of Hannibal, on June 23, 1929. Dr. McCormick is the father of four children, Dorothy May McCormick Holland; Evelyn Ruth, Helen Joyce, and William Charles McCormick, Jr.
Dr. McCormick's parents were both natives of Canada. They came to the United States when young, were married in Michigan and came to Tomahawk in 1889, only a few years after the town was built. The elder McCormick was a practicing veterinary surgeon.
Dr. McCormick passed away on February 28, 1967
Tomahawk native, born June 13, 1901, son of Dr. George R. Baker. He passed away on June 20, 1968 in Tomahawk.
First hospital to be built in Tomahawk; was operated by the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother. Sign above the door reads "SISTERS HOSPITAL". The hospital was dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus on July 20, 1894.
