Evolution of Lincoln County, 1874-1885

Map showing Lincoln County evolution.

Lincoln County was founded in 1874, reaching to the state boundary with Michigan, 54 miles wide and nearly 100 miles long. Soon other counties were created near by, carving territory away from Lincoln County as depicted in the map on the left. One notable inclusion in the original county boundaries was the iron range, which became part of Iron County in 1883, just when iron mine development was surging.

We date our Sturdevant and Chandler map as being after 1883 and before 1885 based on these dates. The particular map copy however does include pencil marking showing the new county boundaries.
